Word has only just come out about the partnership, but according to Sorare, it has been in talks with the Premier League for a long period of time. Now it has succeeded and it will soon be possible to collect the entire competition via Sorare and the Ethereum blockchain. Sorare’s first step into English football was a partnership with West Ham United football club in 2019.
Now it has started a four-year partnership with the football league to produce digital football pictures for all clubs. The total value of the collaboration is not publicly known, so it remains a guess.
ERC-721 token standard
Sorare uses the ERC-721 token standard on Ethereum for issuing the football decals. This is a type of smart contract commonly used for the creation and issuance of NFTs. The idea is that you can buy cards and then draft them into your fantasy football team. If a player scores a goal in real life, the card in question scores points. For example, it can happen that certain players are worth a lot.
Before the cards reach the second-hand market, they are first sold on the Sorare platform. After that it is also possible to buy and sell them on platforms such as OpenSea, where many NFTs are traded.
