Sony Unveils Advanced RGB LED Backlight TV Technology

In a significant development, SONY has unveiled its latest display system, designed to enhance picture quality through the integration of high-density RGB LED backlight technology. This innovative approach allows for independent control over the primary colors – red, green, and blue – resulting in more accurate and wider color representation. By leveraging its expertise in LED technology and bespoke display control, SONY aims to push the boundaries of visual fidelity.

As a pioneer in the field, SONY was the first to introduce a Full-Array RGB LED backlight TV in 2004. Since then, the company has continued to refine its backlight control technology, yielding substantial improvements in color accuracy and gamut coverage. This time around, SONY has collaborated with MediaTek to develop a custom processor and partnered with ROHM to create a specialized LED drive IC, while also working with Sanan Optoelectronics on LED development.

Key Features of the New Display System

The new display system boasts an array of impressive features, including:
1. An expanded color gamut, courtesy of the independently controlled RGB LED technology, which enables the system to cover over 99% of the DCI-P3 standard and approximately 90% of the ITU-R BT.2020 standard. This translates to a more vivid and lifelike visual experience, with a heightened sense of realism.

SONY’s Latest Backlight Control System

The system’s advanced backlight control technology is a key differentiator, offering:
* A wider color gamut for more natural color representation, thanks to the independently controlled RGB LED technology and SONY’s proprietary backlight control system.
* Precise brightness adjustment for a more realistic picture, as the system can allocate power to each RGB channel according to the scene’s characteristics, rather than simply boosting brightness in specific areas.
* Professional-grade peak brightness, with the system capable of reaching levels exceeding 4,000 cd/m², on par with SONY’s professional monitors.
* Fast and accurate signal processing, with 96-bit signal processing enabling the display of deep blacks and bright whites simultaneously.
* Natural color gradation, even at medium brightness levels, which is an area where traditional OLED displays often struggle.
* A wider viewing angle, with reduced color shift and brightness variation, thanks to high-bitrate signal processing.

Precise Color Creation with a Custom Processor

The system’s ability to independently control the brightness of densely packed RGB LEDs enables precise color representation, outperforming traditional Local Dimming systems. With processing power twice that of conventional Local Dimming, the system also incorporates pixel tuning technology to facilitate nuanced color display.
