Son: Aung San Suu Kyi’s Severe Heart Condition Worsens in Myanmar Prison

Aung San Suu Kyi suffering from severe heart disease, son reveals health rapidly deteriorating in military junta's prison

The health of Aung San Suu Kyi, the 80-year-old Nobel Peace laureate, has taken a worrying turn. Her son, Kim Aris, shared his deep concerns this week. He told The Independent of Britain that her heart condition has grown much worse. She has asked to see a heart specialist from outside the prison walls. It is not yet clear if military officials have approved this vital request.

Aris expressed his anguish over his mother’s declining health. He firmly believes her solitary confinement is directly making her heart problems worse. He called for her immediate release. He also condemned the military government’s actions as cruel and life-threatening. Such treatment, he added, is simply unacceptable.

International voices are joining this call for action. William Hague, the former UK Foreign Secretary, also voiced his deep worry. He emphasized that it’s high time Aung San Suu Kyi was set free. Providing her with proper medical care without delay is a moral and humanitarian necessity, he stated.

Aung San Suu Kyi has been in custody since February 2021. That’s when the military seized power in a coup. She was later handed a 27-year prison sentence. These charges, mostly related to corruption, are widely seen as unfair and politically motivated. She has remained in solitary confinement since her arrest, with very little contact with the outside world.

Her situation highlights a much broader human rights crisis. Since the military takeover, many people have been caught in the crackdown. The Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) reports alarming numbers. Roughly 29,628 people have been arrested or detained. A tragic 7,182 people have died. This grim total includes at least 890 children and 1,806 women. Many leaders from her party, the National League for Democracy (NLD), remain locked up. Some have even died in prison, while others were released only after falling critically ill.
