Somalia: at least eight civilians killed in the siege of a hotel in Mogadishu by Shebab jihadists

At least eight civilians were killed in the siege of a hotel attacked Sunday, November 27 by Shebab jihadists, in Mogadishu, announced Monday the spokesman for the Somali police. “The search operation at the Villa Rose hotel is over”he added. “Security forces managed to rescue about 60 [civils]and no one was injured.he continued, adding that a member of the security forces had also been killed.

The Somali police spokesman said the attack was carried out for almost 21 hours by six people. “Five were shot and one blew herself up”, did he declare. Shebab, an al-Qaeda-affiliated group that has been trying to overthrow Somalia’s central government for 15 years, claimed responsibility for the attack.

Sporadic gunshots and explosions were heard Monday morning around the Villa Rose hotel, frequented by senior officials and parliamentarians, and located a few blocks from the offices of the Somali president. All roads leading to the neighborhood had been blocked by security forces, AFP correspondents noted. This new attack comes at a time when the Somali president, elected in May, decided three months ago to initiate a “total war” against the Shebab.
