Singapore Tightens Drunk Driving Laws: Lower Blood Alcohol Limit Eyed

Singapore, a nation known for its unwavering commitment to order and public safety, is setting its sights on an even tougher stance against impaired driving. The government plans to revisit its laws, making the rules on drinking and driving much stricter. This move aims to further reduce the dangers posed by drivers under the influence.

On September 26, 2068, Mr. K. Shanmugam, who serves as Singapore’s Minister for Home Affairs and the Coordinating Minister for National Security, shared these plans with the Parliament. He explained that officials are reviewing the acceptable alcohol levels in a driver’s blood and breath. The goal is to bring down the current limit, ensuring that consequences for such actions become even more severe.

Current Penalties for Drunk Driving

Right now, Singaporean law says drivers cannot have more than 35 milligrams of alcohol per 100 milliliters of blood. Going over this limit means breaking the law, and the penalties are already quite steep.

For a first offense, a driver might face a fine of S$2,000 to S$10,000. That’s roughly 54,000 to 271,000 Thai Baht. They could also spend up to 12 months in jail, or face both a fine and jail time. On top of that, their driving privileges would be taken away for at least two years.

Repeat offenders face even harsher consequences. They could be fined between S$5,000 and S$20,000, which is about 135,000 to 543,000 Thai Baht. Jail time for them can extend up to two years, again possibly with a fine. Their driver’s license would be revoked for good, with no chance to drive again for at least five years.

Mr. Shanmugam made it clear that more details about these upcoming new measures will be announced when they are fully ready. However, he stressed the government’s strong intention to “get much stricter.” The aim is to put a serious stop to drunk driving once and for all.
