Shubman Gill Lauds Ashok Sharma’s ‘Valuable’ Gujarat Titans Debut as PBKS Win IPL 2026 Opener

The Punjab Kings defeated the Gujarat Titans in the opening clash of the 2026 Indian Premier League season on Tuesday night. PBKS successfully chased the target at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh PCA Stadium, anchored by an unbeaten 72 from debutant Cooper Connolly. The match launched the high-stakes domestic calendar, but the most significant development for the Titans came from a 23-year-old fast bowler who finally stepped onto the pitch after four years of waiting.

Ashok Sharma made his official IPL debut. He finished his three overs with figures of 1 for 31 and an economy rate of 10.33. His maiden wicket arrived when he dismissed Marco Jansen. Sharma delivered a deceptive slower ball outside off-stump. Jansen mistimed the shot. Gujarat captain Shubman Gill caught the ball at extra cover.

“He is a very valuable asset,” Gill said following the performance, according to a detailed report. Gujarat head coach Ashish Nehra called the bowler an “exciting raw talent” expected to anchor their attack this season.

Sharma was purchased by the Titans for ₹90 lakh at the Abu Dhabi mini-auction. This followed a massive bidding war involving the Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders. His market value surged after he dominated the 2025-26 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy for Rajasthan. He took 19 wickets in the group stage and finished with 22 overall, averaging 15.63.

He comes from a farming family near Jaipur. He nearly quit the sports world entirely in 2021 before scouts found him in a Red Bull Speedster talent hunt. He hits speeds up to 150 kmph. Despite the raw pace, he spent years navigating the league’s periphery as a net bowler and benched squad member. KKR bought him for ₹55 lakh in 2022. Rajasthan bought him for ₹30 lakh in 2025. He never played a game for either franchise.

His debut marks a distinct payoff for long-term domestic pace development. During his time benched at KKR, Sharma received direct mentorship from Australian captain Pat Cummins. Veterans like Sandeep Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal refined his hard-length tactical approach in domestic circuits. This pipeline of holding raw talent in the wings rather than forcing early debuts allowed him to build his variations. He went from nearly walking away from cricket to deceiving international veterans like Jansen on his first night.
