At least two people were killed and 28 wounded in a shooting early Sunday morning in the US city of Baltimore, authorities said.
Police received multiple calls about a shooting shortly after 12:30 a.m. Sunday in the Brooklyn neighborhood of this Maryland city, Sheriff Rich Worley said at a news conference.
When officers arrived we identified several victims with gunshot wounds,” Worley said.
An adult woman was found dead at the scene, nine victims were transported to nearby hospitals and another 20 to hospitals in the region, it added.
The other deceased victim was also an adult.
The sheriff said they are trying to identify a suspect and determine the motive for the shooting.
It’s an absolute tragedy that didn’t have to happen,” Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott said at the news conference.
The United States has the highest rate of deaths from firearms of all developed countries, with a figure of 20,200 deaths in 2022, according to the Violence Archive organization.
