According to reports from Swedish public television, five people have died and several others have been injured. However, the police have not confirmed these numbers and are only reporting injuries. Of the five people hospitalized, four have undergone surgery, with two in stable condition, one serious, and one with slight wounds.
The police operation is ongoing, and the situation remains unclear. The authorities have begun evacuating nearby schools as a precautionary measure, although a security cordon remains in place. The police have clarified that no officers were injured during the incident.
The Swedish police received a report of the incident after 12:30 local time and are investigating crimes of murder, arson, and serious offenses with weapons. The Örebro hospital has cleared its emergency and intensive care units to treat the injured. The Risbergska Campus School is an adult education center, and according to one of the teachers, Lena Warenmark, there were fewer students than usual at the time of the shooting because many had gone home after finishing their exams.
A woman who worked at a nearby restaurant reported that several teachers and students had sought refuge in the restaurant, describing it as a shelter. The police are protecting those in the restaurant, and students have reported that a masked man entered the school.
The Swedish prime minister, Ulf Kristersson, described the day as “very painful” for Sweden and expressed his thoughts for those affected. He emphasized the need for the public to follow police information and allow the police to investigate the incident. The opposition leader, Magdalena Andersson, and other politicians have also expressed their condolences and shock at the incident.
The leader of the Swedish Democratic Party, Jimmie Åkesson, described the news as a “nightmare,” while the leader of the center party, Muharem Demirok, emphasized that schools should be safe places. Shootings in educational centers are rare in Sweden, with the last mass shooting occurring in the 1960s. Since 2015, there have been seven attacks on schools in the country, resulting in fatalities in three cases.
