Surgeons in Shanghai have achieved what many might call a medical miracle. They successfully reattached a patient’s head after it was nearly severed from their body. This complex operation offered little hope for survival at first. Now, the patient is on the road to recovery and rehabilitation.
The spine surgery team at Shanghai Changzheng Hospital shared this incredible news on August 24, 2025. They described a patient with a horrific neck injury. A powerful robotic arm impact had almost completely disconnected the cervical spine. This meant the patient’s head was barely still attached. Against all odds, the patient survived and is now getting better.
Dr. Chen Huajiang, who leads the cervical spine surgery department, spoke about the case. With over 30 years of experience, he has seen countless critical spinal injuries. But Dr. Chen stated he had never encountered a case as severe as this one.
The patient first arrived at the hospital in June. The accident caused high-level paralysis and a sudden cardiac arrest. Doctors quickly performed emergency CPR, bringing back faint vital signs. The medical team searched records worldwide but found no reports of anyone surviving such a severe spine dislocation. This made their challenge even greater.
The high-risk surgery lasted nearly three hours. The surgical team not only precisely realigned the patient’s dislocated cervical spine. They also invented a new method called the “satellite plate” technique. This technique uses small metal plates to strengthen the main spinal structure.
Dr. Chen expressed relief that no complications arose during the procedure. He called the surgery a great success. The patient stopped needing blood pressure medication on the very day of the operation. Their breathing also improved, with no major lung infections. Thanks to careful nursing, the patient overcame several other critical stages. They were able to leave the hospital on July 9.
