Santos Laguna Signs Fran Villalba

Sporting de Gijón Midfielder Fran Villalba Exits Club to Join Santos Laguna

Fran Villalba, a talented midfielder from Valencia, has ended his time with Sporting de Gijón to join Mexican club Santos Laguna. The 26-year-old playmaker arrived at the Spanish club on loan from Birmingham, before making the move permanent. However, with the return of Abelardo as head coach, Villalba opted to leave the club and join Málaga on loan.

Villalba’s Departure Follows Mixed Season

Villalba’s recent season with Sporting de Gijón was marked by inconsistency, with the midfielder struggling to secure a regular starting spot. An injury in the preseason limited his opportunities, and he was eventually relegated to intermittent appearances on the pitch.

New Coach, Same Fate

The arrival of Rubén Albés as head coach seemed to offer Villalba a fresh start, potentially providing him with a more significant role in the team. However, the Vigo coach has endorsed Villalba’s departure, allowing the midfielder to join Santos Laguna on a three-year contract.

Villalba’s Statistical Legacy at Sporting de Gijón

During his time with Sporting de Gijón, Villalba played 77 games, scoring four goals and providing 10 assists. The midfielder’s departure marks the end of an era for the club, as he bids farewell to the red and white shirt.
