Malayalam filmmaker Sanal Kumar Sasidharan is back in the spotlight, and not for a new movie. He recently secured bail from a court in Kerala. This news comes just two days after authorities detained him at Mumbai Airport. The director himself shared the update on social media, sparking much conversation.
It was a dramatic return for Sanal, who had just flown in from America. Immigration officers at Mumbai Airport stopped him based on an existing lookout notice. He was then handed over to Kochi police. This isn’t his first run-in with the law over these same allegations. He faced similar detention in 2022, only to be released on bail later that year.
A Judge Questions the Arrest
During his recent court appearance, the judge raised questions about the way the director was taken into custody. Following this scrutiny, bail was granted. Sanal spoke emotionally after the decision. He wrote online that he finally felt a renewed belief in the justice system. He shared that not all officials bow to the whims of wrongdoers. Some, he said, truly honor both the law and human dignity.
Family Steps Back, Friend Steps Up
In a surprising revelation, Sanal also confessed that his own family refused to help him in this legal battle. He explained that his family was too scared of “mafia” power. Because of this fear, they would not take on the responsibility for his bail. Instead, a close friend stepped forward during this tough time, shouldering the burden. Sanal expressed deep gratitude, saying that the media and platforms like Facebook had once again saved his life.
The Accusations and His Defense
The director faces serious accusations. He is said to have consistently harassed a well-known actress from the Malayalam film industry. This harassment reportedly happened through online messages. The actress took her concerns to the police, filing an official complaint. Sanal, however, strongly denies the charges. He claims he was only worried about the actress’s safety. He believes she is in danger from an “industry mafia.” He has called all the allegations against him completely false.
