Samsung has teamed up with the US Department of Defense to create a rugged tablet designed specifically for military use. The new device, called the Galaxy Tab Active5 Tactical Edition, is packed with features that make it ideal for high-risk operations.
The tablet is powered by a Samsung Exynos 1380 processor, which is built using 5nm technology and can reach processing speeds of up to 2.4 GHz. This chip has been optimized for military use, with various modes to support secure connections:
- 5G Band-Locking mode lets users connect to secure networks.
- Stealth mode allows for communication outside cellular networks by disabling cellular connectivity and radio frequency transmission.
- Covert Lock mode turns off the modem and GPS to prevent the tablet from sending out radio signals.
- Night Vision mode adjusts the display so it can be read while wearing night vision goggles.
The Galaxy Tab Active5 Tactical Edition has also been customized with military-grade software, including
- ATAK (Android Team Awareness Kit) developed by the US Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL). This app uses sensors, communication systems, and data analysis to give personnel real-time situational awareness and help them make quick decisions.
- BATDOK (Battlefield Assisted Trauma Distributed Observation Kit), also developed by AFRL. This app lets medical staff track the condition of injured soldiers on the battlefield and monitor multiple patients’ vital signs wirelessly using the tablet.
Key Features for Military Use
The tablet has several other features that make it suitable for military operations:
- Samsung Knox security platform with dual-layer encryption to protect data.
- Certified by the National Security Agency (NSA) for secure access to classified information.
- IP68 rating, meaning it can withstand being submerged in water up to 1.5 meters deep for 30 minutes.
- MIL-STD-810H certification, which means it can handle harsh environments like extreme temperatures, vibrations, and high humidity.
- Screen works even when wet.
- Removable battery.
- Compatible with a rugged S Pen stylus.
Samsung hasn’t announced the price of the Galaxy Tab Active5 Tactical Edition.
