A medical helicopter suffered a mechanical failure and crashed onto a busy highway in Sacramento, California, on Monday evening. The incident left all three crew members with severe injuries. The pilot, a nurse, and a paramedic were the only people aboard the aircraft.
Justin Sylvia, a spokesperson for the Sacramento Fire Department, shared details of the dramatic event. The helicopter had just completed a patient drop-off at a hospital. It was flying back to its base around 7:00 PM local time when trouble struck. Witness accounts described the helicopter quickly losing altitude. This sudden descent prompted drivers on Highway 50 to hit their brakes, preventing a potentially larger tragedy. Remarkably, no one on the ground was hurt, even with the wreckage sprawled across the road.
Amidst the chaos, a remarkable act of public heroism unfolded. One of the injured crew members was trapped beneath the helicopter’s crumpled frame. Firefighters worked quickly, but they needed more help. Over 15 ordinary citizens stopped their cars and rushed to assist. Together, they managed to lift the heavy wreckage just enough. This allowed rescuers to safely pull the injured crew member free. All three crew members were then rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) had to close the westbound lanes of Highway 50. This allowed emergency crews to investigate the scene and begin the difficult process of removing the helicopter’s remains. The crash caused long lines of traffic, as seen in photos circulating on social media. White smoke could be seen rising from the wreckage, adding to the somber scene.
REACH Air Medical Services, the company owning the helicopter, released a statement. They expressed deep concern for their team and their families. The company confirmed they are fully cooperating with authorities. They are also closely monitoring the condition of their three injured crew members.
Sacramento City Council member Lisa Kaplan went to the crash site with police. She described the sight as “heart-wrenching.” Kaplan emphasized the daily sacrifices made by pilots and medical staff. She noted they risk their lives to help others. The cause of the accident is now under a thorough investigation.
