Benfica president Rui Costa expressed confidence and highlighted the democratic significance of the club’s election day, anticipating a record voter turnout despite refraining from predicting the outcome.
Speaking to journalists near the Estádio da Luz, Costa emphasized the day’s profound importance for the Portuguese football club’s future. He declared it “a very important day, beautiful and that everything goes well and within democracy.”
To Benfica TV (BTV), he reiterated his happiness and predicted a new voting record. “The record number of voters will be beaten, for sure. It is a big day, it is a Benfica day,” Costa said.
When pressed on whether he had prepared speeches for victory or defeat, Costa stated he had done neither. He indicated his immediate focus was on casting his vote and then on the club’s upcoming match.
“I have the vote to cast now, and then I’ll deal with the Arouca game,” he commented, underscoring his present-moment outlook. He attributed the high number of members participating to “the greatness of Benfica.”
Costa had been “happy and confident” since the start of the campaign. He stated he had conducted the campaign he deemed necessary and “tried to be equal to myself.”
He described reactions from club members as “very good,” adding, “Among Benfica fans, I’m always well.” He stressed that the electoral process should unfold “within normality and with the due respect that the club deserves.”
The club president also expressed his hope for a victory in the upcoming match against Arouca.
Regarding questions about potential future elections, Costa dismissed immediate concerns. “That’s not what’s concerning me right now. The members will dictate that,” he said.
