French Rugby Players Accused of Rape in Argentina
Two French Rugby Players Arrested and Transferred to Mendoza to Face Prosecution
Two French rugby players, Hugo Auradou, 20, and Oscar Jegou, 21, have been arrested and transferred to Mendoza, Argentina, to face prosecution for allegedly raping a young woman. The incident allegedly occurred after a friendly match against Argentina in Mendoza.
Victim’s Lawyer Claims Evidence of Rape and Violence
The victim’s lawyer claims to have evidence that the two men raped her and beat her with "ferocious violence." According to the lawyer, the victim was hit in the face, head, and ribs when she tried to flee.
Details of the Incident
The two players met the woman in a bar after the match against Pumas in Mendoza and, after feeling dizzy after having a few drinks, she was taken to the Diplomatic Hotel, where she was sexually abused. The players and coaching staff were staying in that same hotel.
Allegations of Violence and Rape
The woman’s lawyer said Auradou invited the woman to his room for a drink after the bar, but when she sensed there was a deception, she tried to leave. However, the lawyer for the selected players denies any type of violence, maintaining that the sex was consensual first with one player and then with both.
Consequences of a Guilty Verdict
If the players are charged, they could be held in preventive detention during the judicial process, which would be held behind closed doors. If found guilty, they could face sentences of up to 20 years in prison.
Argentine Law on Rape
According to the Ministry of Justice in Argentina, when there is "carnal access" the crime is equivalent to "rape."
