RTX 5090 GPU and PSU Damaged by Overheated 12VHPWR Power Cable

A redditor named Roachard shared a shocking discovery about his MSI RTX 5090 graphics card. The 12VHPWR power connector, which came with his Corsair SF1000L power supply, melted and caused damage to both the GPU and PSU.

The damage mostly affected the PSU, but it also reached the GPU, making it irreparable. Roachard mentioned that his RTX 5090 wasn’t overclocked, and the problem lay with the 12VHPWR connector.

What happened?

The MSI RTX 5090 Gaming TRIO OC graphics card was connected to the Corsair SF1000L PSU using the 12VHPWR connector. This connector was the culprit behind the damage. Roachard shared an image showing the extent of the damage, with four pins on the connector suffering significant damage, one of which was melted and swollen.

Past incidents

This isn’t the first time the RTX 5090 has been involved in a melting incident. Previous cases have been reported with the RTX 5090 Founders Edition, which is NVIDIA’s own version, and ASUS PSUs. These incidents share a similar pattern of the 12VHPWR connector melting and causing damage to the GPU and PSU.
