Roma beats Sassuolo, shares Serie A lead with Napoli

Roma’s victory over Sassuolo has propelled them to a shared lead at the top of Italy’s Serie A, reshuffling the championship race after AC Milan stumbled.

The capital club defeated Sassuolo 1-0 on Sunday, drawing level with Napoli at 18 points after eight rounds. Both teams now sit one point ahead of AC Milan.

Paulo Dybala scored Roma’s decisive goal in the 16th minute. Roma nearly extended their lead, with Lorenzo Pellegrini hitting the post in the 68th minute and Brazilian forward Wesley threatening in the 83rd.

Napoli secured their share of the lead with a 3-1 win over Inter Milan. AC Milan dropped to third place with 17 points after a 2-2 draw against modest Pisa on Friday. Inter Milan is fourth with 15 points.

Sassuolo, whose three-game unbeaten run was snapped, currently sits in 12th place with 10 points.

In other weekend matches, Verona squandered a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 at home against Cagliari. Roberto Gagliardini scored for Verona in the 23rd minute, followed by Nigerian Gift Orbán in the 59th.

Cagliari mounted a comeback with goals from Riyad Idrisi in the 77th minute and Mattia Felici in the 92nd minute. Cagliari, winless in their last four matches, is 13th with nine points. Verona remains winless in 17th place with five points, just above the relegation zone.

Torino secured a 2-1 home victory over Genoa. Morten Thorsby put Genoa ahead in the seventh minute. Torino equalized through an own goal by Stefano Sabelli in the 63rd minute and won it with a goal from Chilean Guillermo Maripan in the 90th.

Genoa, now last in the league with three points, suffered their fourth defeat in five Serie A games. Torino is 11th with 11 points.
