Portugal’s National Republican Guard (GNR) is cautioning drivers about significantly increased dangers when operating vehicles in heavy rain, specifically highlighting the critical risk of aquaplaning. The national law enforcement agency is urging motorists to adopt essential precautions to prevent accidents during wet conditions.
The GNR advises drivers to regularly inspect their tires, paying close attention to both pressure and condition. Incorrect tire pressure can substantially elevate the risk of aquaplaning.
Drivers should also check the wear and depth of their tire treads. Greater tread depth improves tire grip on wet surfaces, thereby reducing the likelihood of losing control.
Crucially, the GNR emphasizes the importance of reducing vehicle speed when driving in the rain. Lower speeds provide better control and increase reaction time.
Aquaplaning occurs when a layer of water accumulates between a vehicle’s tires and the road surface. This separates the tires from the ground, causing the vehicle to lose contact with the asphalt.
When aquaplaning happens, drivers experience a loss of both steering and braking control. This can lead to uncontrolled skidding and potential road accidents.
