The buzz around Manchester United is growing louder. RB Leipzig star Benjamin Sesko seems to be heading to Old Trafford. This 22-year-old Slovenian is on the radar of Erik ten Hag’s side. Many fans are already dreaming of his goals.
But a seasoned voice from United’s past is waving a red flag. René Meulensteen, who served on Sir Alex Ferguson’s coaching staff, has spoken up. He told the English press that the club might be making the same mistake again. It’s a familiar feeling, one tied to Rasmus Hojlund.
Meulensteen put it plainly. “Manchester United is doing with Sesko what they did with Hojlund.” He warned that if Sesko scores in his first three or four games, he might seem like the answer. “But there’s a real chance that won’t happen at all,” Meulensteen added.
Think about Hojlund’s path. He played well for Atalanta in Italy. Then he joined United, and things didn’t click right away. Meulensteen believes the same story could play out with Sesko. The Bundesliga is a very different league from the Premier League. Sesko will need time to get used to the English game. “Does Sesko have potential? One hundred percent,” Meulensteen said. “But he is still young. He is growing as a player. He is not a finished product.”
So, if Meulensteen were in charge at United, who would he sign? His answer came without hesitation. He picked Ollie Watkins from Aston Villa.
