Sometimes, even the most routine plans hit a snag. That’s what happened recently to Ralf Rangnick, the 67-year-old coach currently leading Austria’s national football team. He found himself in the hospital for emergency care after an ankle surgery last month took an unexpected turn. The news, first reported by ‘The Sun’, caught many by surprise.
Rangnick, known for his sharp tactical mind, had a procedure to address some joint wear in his ankle. It was meant to be a straightforward fix. However, the recovery didn’t go as planned. His surgical wound developed a severe infection, making another trip to the operating room necessary. It was a serious setback for the veteran coach.
Despite the scare, there’s good news coming out of Austria. Thomas Trukesitz, who speaks for the Austrian Football Federation, confirmed that Rangnick is doing well. “Ralf Rangnick is responding positively to the treatment,” Trukesitz stated. “There is no reason to be alarmed about his health.” It’s a relief to hear he’s on the mend.
Football fans might remember Rangnick from his time as interim coach at Manchester United during the 2021/22 season. He also made his mark at clubs like Schalke 04, RB Leipzig, and Stuttgart. Now, he’s set to leave the hospital later this week, with Friday marked as his day to head home.
Even from his hospital bed, Rangnick’s focus remains firmly on the pitch. He’s already thinking about Austria’s upcoming World Cup 2026 qualifiers in September. They’re slated to play against Cyprus and Bosnia-Herzegovina. Austria has been on a strong run, leading their group with two wins, and Rangnick is eager to rejoin his squad and keep that momentum going.
