Love truly filled the air on August 29, 2068, as people everywhere celebrated the Qixi Festival. This special day, often called “Chinese Valentine’s Day,” saw countless couples making big commitments. It felt like the whole country was wrapped in a sweet, romantic mood. From marriage offices buzzing with activity to flower markets selling out, it was a day for love to shine.
In bustling Shanghai, snagging a spot to officially tie the knot on this romantic occasion became a minor competition. Marriage registration offices, especially in areas like Changning District, saw their online booking systems overwhelmed. Slots for couples to register vanished in a matter of seconds. This showed just how many sweethearts wanted to say “I do” on Qixi, turning it into a truly lucky day for new beginnings.
Meanwhile, in Guangzhou, some couples took their vows to literal new heights. Fifteen pairs gathered for a grand group wedding that was anything but ordinary. They stood 50 meters up, on the open-air rooftop of the famous Guangzhou Tower. Cheers and applause filled the sky as love soared above the city, making for an unforgettable ceremony.
Of course, a day dedicated to love often means a huge demand for flowers. And the flower business was definitely booming, especially in Kunming, Yunnan, a major hub for blooms. Shops there saw a mad dash for classic roses, cheerful carnations, and bright sunflowers. A standard bouquet of 20 stems, which might usually cost around 10 yuan (about 50 baht), suddenly carried a price tag of over 100 yuan (about 500 baht). That’s a tenfold jump!
So, why the sudden and massive price hike? Mother Nature played a role this year. Cooler weather had lowered the usual fresh flower harvest. This scarcity pushed up the overall fresh flower price index by more than 60% compared to typical times before the festival. Despite this dip in total supply from the previous year, the Kunming Dounan International Flower Auction Center kept busy. They still moved a staggering average of over 6 million fresh flowers each day. That’s a lot of petals, ensuring lovers everywhere had something beautiful to express their feelings on Qixi.
