Protest over the death of two Haitian migrants in Mexico

Haitian migrants protested this Thursday against the immigration policies of the United States during the funeral of two of their compatriots in the Mexican border city of Tijuana.

The Haitian Bridge Alliance association reported that Jocelyn Anselme, 34, was shot to death as the victim of an assault while Calory Archange, 30, did not receive medical attention for a heart attack.

"We stand in solidarity with the family of our fallen brothers and sisters"said Guerline Jozef, executive director of that organization."We are here to demand an end to the policies, to the American laws that are killing our brothers".

Jozef accused Title 42, a policy put in place under President Donald Trump that allows the United States to automatically expel migrants who arrive in its territory, of being one of the reasons behind the deaths of migrants.

"Our brother Calory died because he was forced to remain in Mexico under Title 42"said.

For her part, Nicole Ramos, a lawyer from the organization Al Otro Lado" accused the Mexican government of not sufficiently protecting migrants.

"The Mexican government refuses to protect migrants, not only from Haiti but its own migrants from Michoacán (west) and Guerrero (south)"said.

At the end of May, Central American and Haitian migrants protested in Tijuana against the continuation of Title 42, after a US judge prevented the administration of President Joe Biden from putting an end to that policy.

Every year, dozens of migrants from Central America and other Latin American countries seek to reach the United States fleeing violence and poverty in their countries.
