Portuguese Nuno Borges Reenters World Top 50 After Shanghai Climb

Nuno Borges has found his way back into the tennis elite. This Monday, the Portuguese star re-entered the world’s top 50 singles rankings. His climb places him firmly at the 46th spot. This is a significant moment for the player, especially after his recent showing on the international stage. Borges truly turned heads at the Shanghai Masters 1000. He became the first Portuguese man ever to reach the fourth round of that major tournament. Though he eventually fell to Australia’s Alex de Minaur, his performance was a clear statement. This strong run pushed him up five places in the rankings. It also brought him back into the coveted group of 50 top players. He had briefly dropped out of this group in early September.

Beyond Borges, Portugal has two other talented men making waves in the top 200. Jaime Faria currently holds the 128th spot, despite a slight dip. Meanwhile, Henrique Rocha is on the rise, having climbed to 161st place. The global men’s singles rankings continue to be a tight race at the very top. Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz still leads the pack. Italy’s Jannik Sinner sits close behind him. Germany’s Alexander Zverev rounds out the top three.

It wasn’t just singles players making news. Francisco Cabral, another Portuguese talent, maintained his strong position in the doubles rankings. He remains among the world’s top 30. Despite a first-round exit in Shanghai, Cabral only saw a minor shift. He now stands at 29th place. His regular partner, Lucas Miedler, is currently ranked 25th.

The women’s game also saw some shifts at the highest levels. American Jessica Pegula moved up to fifth place. She traded spots with Russia’s Mirra Andreeva. The top three women’s players remained largely unchanged. Belarus’s Aryna Sabalenka still leads the world. Poland’s Iga Swiatek is right behind her. American Coco Gauff holds the third spot. Portugal’s women players are also making their mark. Matilde Jorge continues to be the nation’s highest-ranked female tennis player. She sits at the 250th position globally. Her sister, Francisca, is not far behind. Francisca is currently ranked just five places below Matilde.
