Portugal President Promulgates Revised Immigration Law

Portugal’s President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa formally enacted a revised immigration law Thursday, stating that the updated legislation now sufficiently addresses constitutional concerns he had previously raised.

The President’s office announced the promulgation of the new Foreigners Law on its website.

Rebelo de Sousa noted his belief that the diploma “minimally corresponds to the essential constitutional doubts” he initially identified. These concerns had been subsequently affirmed by the Constitutional Court.

The Assembly of the Republic approved the revised diploma with a 70% majority vote from deputies.

This new legislation amends the existing law from July 4, which outlines the legal framework for the entry, stay, exit, and removal of foreign nationals from Portuguese territory.
