Portugal’s national handball team defeated Egypt 30-27 in a preparatory match on Saturday, demonstrating improved defensive play ahead of the Euro 2016 championship despite failing to win the “Terras do Demo” International Tournament.
The victory came as part of the “Heróis do Mar,” or “Heroes of the Sea,” squad’s preparations for the upcoming European tournament.
Portugal’s defense in Saturday’s encounter was notably more cohesive than in their previous match against Egypt just two days earlier.
In their first meeting on Thursday, Egypt had defeated Portugal 32-28.
Saturday’s game saw Portugal’s aggressive defense, anchored by goalkeeper Diogo Rêma, generate numerous counter-attacks.
This strategy allowed Portugal to establish an early commanding 12-3 lead after an initial 3-3 deadlock.
Egypt struggled against the Portuguese pressure, trailing 17-11 at halftime.
The second half was more balanced, with Egypt narrowing the gap to 25-22 due to some technical errors from Portugal.
However, Portugal maintained effective ball circulation and offensive solutions.
As time expired, Portugal secured what was described as an “undisputed victory” in the match. The tournament was held in Moimenta da Beira, a town in Portugal.
