Pope Leo Warns Global Youth: AI Overuse Stifles Independent Thought

Pope Leo XIV issued a strong warning to young people globally against the over-reliance on artificial intelligence, cautioning that it risks diminishing genuine human connection and independent thought.

Speaking virtually to the National Catholic Youth Conference in Indianapolis, the Pontiff acknowledged AI as a powerful tool. He urged its responsible deployment among the younger generation.

The Pope emphasized that AI cannot replace real human relationships. He warned that excessive use could impede the development of “true humanity.”

His address last Friday, which included answering questions on technology’s role in young people’s lives, highlighted AI as a topic of special priority for him.

“Please use it with care, caution, and do not let the use of AI limit the growth of true humanity,” he stated during the virtual event.

He further advised that humans must retain the fundamental abilities to think, create, make decisions, and form authentic friendships, even in a scenario where AI might no longer be available.

Pope Leo also discussed social media, recognizing its capacity to connect people and foster faith. However, he stressed that it cannot substitute for face-to-face interactions.
