Hubert Hurkacz Will Not Participate in Paris 2024 Olympic Games Due to Injury
Polish tennis player Hubert Hurkacz, currently ranked number seven on the ATP lists, will not participate in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games due to an injury sustained during the Wimbledon tournament. The top 10 player on the men’s circuit, who was initially planning to compete in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles with world number 1 Iga Swiatek, has decided to withdraw from the tournament citing his ongoing recovery process.
Injury Suffered During Wimbledon
Hurkacz was injured in the most unpredictable way possible during his second-round match at Wimbledon, where he fell with a knee injury while trying to volley against Frenchman Arthur Fils. Despite making progress in his rehabilitation, he and his team have decided that he will not be well enough to compete at the Paris Olympics.
Third Top 10 Player to Withdraw from the Games
This decision makes Hurkacz the third top 10 player on the ATP rankings to withdraw from the world championship, following Andrey Rublev, ranked number 9, who was granted permission to participate as an Authorized Neutral Athlete but withdrew due to his ongoing physical recovery process, and Grigor Dimitrov, ranked number 10, who will focus on the American tour after not participating in any competitions with his country (Bulgaria) since 2015.
Impact on Iga Swiatek’s Participation
Hurkacz’s absence will directly affect Polish tennis star Iga Swiatek, who was planning to form a mixed doubles pair with Hurkacz at the Games. It is still unknown whether she will be able to participate in the Olympic tournament with another partner.
The Paris 2024 Olympic Games are set to take place in August, with the tennis tournament featuring a star-studded lineup of top players from around the world.
