Get ready, cycling fans! Some of the sport’s biggest names are gathering this Sunday. Tadej Pogacar, Jonas Vingegaard, Remco Evenepoel, Juan Ayuso, and João Almeida lead an elite group of riders. These stars, and many other top talents, will compete in the European Championship road race in France.
This race is creating a lot of excitement. It comes just one week after the amazing World Championships in Rwanda. Tadej Pogacar stole the show there. He attacked a massive 104 kilometers from the finish line. That bold move secured him his second World Champion title.
Now, everyone is wondering: will the Slovenian star try another long-distance attack at the Europeans?
Pogacar spoke about this possibility before the race. “To make a big break, you need a lot of power,” he explained. “Maybe I’ll try if the chance comes up. I don’t really expect it to happen this way, but never say never.” He went on to describe why a long-range attack is less likely here than at the Worlds.
“This race has some very tough climbs,” Pogacar noted. “But they aren’t super long or too steep.” He also pointed out the big difference in distance. The European race is much shorter, at 203 kilometers. The World Championships, by contrast, stretched for 267 kilometers. “This race will be much more explosive,” he stated. “We will definitely see more riders battling for the win.” This event marks Pogacar’s return to the European Championships, as his last appearance was back in 2021.
Pogacar is also keeping a close eye on his rivals. A showdown with Jonas Vingegaard in a one-day race is something we haven’t seen in a while. “If he’s here at the European Championship, it’s because he’s in good form,” Pogacar said about Vingegaard. “And Remco? He showed everyone how strong he is at the World Championships. He’s coming into this race very motivated.”
