Phoenix extends its advantage after the second day in Baiona

Phoenix amplía su ventaja tras la segunda jornada en Baiona

Phoenix continues adding unbeatable sensations in this season start of 52 SUPERSETS and this Wednesday managed to strengthen, and expand, its leadership in the ABANCA 52 SUPER SERIES Baiona Sailing Week. All thanks to a third place and a first place on the second day. This way, it continues first, with four points clear of resurgent Quantum Racing, who started the day in fifth position and are now second, and Platoon, third. These two add the same points (12) in the general classification.

Baiona received the TP52 this Wednesday in an unbeatable way, with excellent conditions. According to Juan Vila, Interlodge navigator, “a typical day in the bay of Vigo”, and it is that despite the fact that in the first sleeve, the wind was more unstable, especially on the first beat, then it stabilized. Already in the second they enjoyed 20 knots of wind on average, with gusts of up to 23 and others of 17. In this last regatta, Phoenix showed why it is the favorite to win the first round of the season that is taking place in Baiona. He’s not making any mistakes, he’s extremely reliable, he’s sailing fast and upwind he seems intractable. He took the second test of the day with flying colors after taking the lead just as he approached the leeward gate, winning on the right hand side of the first run. From there she escaped from her pursuers to win with more than 100 meters of advantage over a Doug deVos Quantum Racing that won the first heat and this Thursday will start the day (from 1:00 p.m.) as second, tied on points with Platoon. The German boat has not gone down in any of the two days of competition that accumulate from fifth place (it won the second race last Tuesday) and remains third.

Precisely in the Platoon there are three Spaniards: the Balearic Jordi Calafat, the Galician Víctor Mariño and the Cantabrian Javier Plaza. The latter, on his arrival at the pontoon of the Monte Real Club de Yates de Baiona, commented that “It was a good day for us, with a second and a fourth. I think If we finish in the top four in all the races, we have a good chance of winning the championship.. This Wednesday we had a bit of luck on the second beat of the first regatta, with a left hand roll. In the second we did not go very well, we rode the first passage through the buoy sixth, but in the end we were fourth. I hope we get a few days with a little less wind because I think the boat goes a little better with less intensity. But this is a long-distance race: we are scoring for the end of the season, to try to win the league and the World Cup”.

On the other hand, the Thai Vayu and the Turkish did not have a great Wednesday provence. The latter did not go out sailing because of the breakage of his stay suffered last Tuesday in the first race. As for Vayu, he signed an eighth place (last) and a fifth and is currently fourth in the general table. For the two heats that will take place this Thursday in Baiona, the forecast is that there will be a decrease in the intensity of the wind and it will be interesting to check the performance of the boats in lighter breezes.
