Experienced Spanish coach Rafa Benítez has taken the helm at Greek club Panathinaikos, marking a new chapter for the manager and a declared “new era” for the team currently competing in the Europa League.
The 65-year-old was officially appointed on Friday, October 24, 2025, after being without a club since his departure from Spain’s Celta Vigo in 2024.
Panathinaikos announced the move with significant fanfare. The club stated it was “the start of a new era” and proclaimed Benítez as “the best coach that has arrived at a Greek team.”

Benítez brings a wealth of experience to the Greek capital. His extensive career includes stints at prominent European clubs such as Valencia, Liverpool, Napoli, and Chelsea.
The move sees him take charge of a team currently involved in the Europa League, offering an immediate challenge on the continental stage.
He replaces Rui Vitória, who had also coached Panathinaikos earlier this season.
