OpenAI, Oracle Build $500 Billion Stargate AI Data Center Network

OpenAI and Oracle are partnering on an ambitious, half-trillion-dollar infrastructure project named “Stargate,” poised to become one of the largest computing ventures globally to support advanced artificial intelligence.

The companies, along with Related Digital, plan to construct a massive data center campus in Saline, Michigan, starting in early 2026. This initial campus alone is designed to consume more than one gigawatt of power. Industry estimates suggest a data center of this scale could cost up to $50 billion.

The Michigan facility is a component of a broader strategy by OpenAI and Oracle to add 4.5 gigawatts of processing power to the Stargate project across six additional data centers throughout the United States. Upon its full completion, the Stargate initiative is projected to have a total capacity exceeding eight gigawatts, requiring an investment exceeding $450 billion.

OpenAI has stated the Michigan project will accelerate its timeline for Stargate to achieve a total investment of $500 billion and utilize 10 gigawatts of power. Related Digital is specifically responsible for the development of the Michigan campus. The undertaking underscores the immense capital and energy requirements necessary to power the next generation of AI systems.
