The Sun newspaper shed light this Wednesday on the story behind Onana’s loan move to Trabzonspor in Turkey. This deal isn’t official yet. The British paper shared that the Cameroonian goalkeeper’s relationship with Ruben Amorim had “irreparably” soured in recent weeks.
According to The Sun, Ruben Amorim was “deeply dissatisfied with the tendon injury” Onana suffered early in pre-season. This was especially true when it became known that Onana, who usually starts in goal for Manchester United, had played on a “muddy field” in his home country of Cameroon before coming back to England.
Additionally, The Sun noted that several people connected to Manchester United felt Onana was “showing a lack of involvement and interest in working” in the days before the international break. Because of this, Ruben Amorim was “happy” about his exit. Onana had lost his starting spot to Bayindir at the season’s beginning. He returned to play against Grimsby in the League Cup. However, he put on a forgettable performance against the fourth-tier team. He then went back to the bench for the next game against Burnley.
“It seemed like Onana was just there to make an appearance,” a club source told the English newspaper. “But he wasn’t really present or showing any team spirit.”
After the departures of Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Garnacho, and Antony, players who also weren’t in Ruben Amorim’s plans for this season, the Portuguese coach feels Onana’s loan “cleaned out the last negative influence” still lingering in the Red Devils’ locker room. The coach believes this will have a “positive effect” on the team.
