Olympic Games Calendar Shift: LA 2028 Athletics to Kick Off First Week

Historic change in the Olympic Games calendar: in Los Angeles 2028 athletics will be held in the first week

World Athletics and the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games Organizing Committee have made a historic announcement, shaking up the traditional competition calendar. Athletics will now take place in the first week of the Games, a move that will also see swimming competitions shifted to the second week.

The iconic Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum will host athletics events, making it the first stadium to host events in three Olympic Games. This change is a testament to the commitment to innovation in athletics and raising the global profile of athletes.

According to World Athletics President Sebastian Coe, this change will result in the most exciting start to the Games, captivating audiences worldwide and setting the stage for an unforgettable Olympic journey.

Swimming competitions will now take place in the second week, while marathon events will remain in their traditional spot, with medals being presented during the closing ceremony. This change has been made after close collaboration with World Athletics, World Aquatics, the IOC, and OBS.

LA28 Athlete Director Janet Evans believes that the positive effects of this change will extend beyond the two sports involved, strengthening the Games as a whole and benefiting all sports in the program.

The 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games will take place from July 14 to 30, 2028, featuring over 10,000 athletes from more than 200 countries competing in 35 sports. This will be the third time Los Angeles has hosted the Olympic Games, following the 1932 and 1984 events.
