Shohei Ohtani held Seattle to one score in six innings and drove in a run as the Los Angeles Angels beat the Mariners 4-3 on Wednesday night.
Ohtani (1-0) didn’t allow a run to the Mariners after giving up one in a turbulent first inning. He finished the day allowing three hits and four walks, in a performance that included eight strikeouts.
The Japanese drove in Taylor Ward with a single in the top of the seventh inning off Mexican reliever Andrés Munoz to put the Angels’ lead at 4-1.
After Julio Rodriguez scored in the bottom of the first inning to give Seattle the lead, Logan O’Hoppe hit a two-run homer off starter Chris Flexen (0-1) to put Los Angeles ahead. for 2-1.
Ohtani and Mike Trout drove in runs off Muñoz in the seventh, but the Mariners got within a score in the bottom half on RBIs by Ty France and Eugenio Suárez.
Venezuelan José Quijada processed the ninth inning to score his first save.
