NYC’s First Muslim, South Asian Mayor Zohran Mamdani Celebrates Win with Bollywood’s ‘Dhoom Machale’

The unexpected sound of the Bollywood hit “Dhoom Machale” recently echoed through New York City as Zohran Mamdani delivered his victory speech. Mamdani was elected as a new New York City Mayor. His win marks him as the city’s first Muslim and first South Asian Mayor.

The video of the speech quickly went viral on social media. Many netizens playfully suggested Mamdani was a fan of Bollywood. The song’s composer, Pritam, has now shared his delight over the choice.

Pritam expressed his thrill at Mamdani selecting the popular track from the 2004 film “Dhoom.” He described the song as “a perfect fit” for the celebratory moment. The composer had been a supporter of Mamdani’s campaign.

Mamdani is the son of renowned Indian filmmaker Mira Nair and Columbia University professor Mahmood Mamdani. Pritam recalled having met Mira Nair when she was developing a film titled “The Bengali Detective.”

Pritam learned of Mamdani’s victory and the accompanying soundtrack from a friend in the United States. He was keenly following the election results due to his past connection with Mamdani’s family. Mamdani, a Democrat, defeated independent Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa.

“Dhoom Machale,” originally from Yash Raj Films, has seen widespread popularity. It has been remade in multiple Southeast Asian languages, showcasing its broad appeal. Pritam highlighted that the song was hugely popular in the Southeast when it first released.

The composer emphasized Bollywood music’s role as a significant “soft power” for India. He noted its capacity to forge connections globally. Pritam cited instances of international recognition, including Prince Charles’ ceremony band previously performing “Dhoom Machale.”

He explained that Bollywood songs create a bond with audiences in various regions. This includes Central Asia, America, Britain, and Europe.
