Nvidia’s CEO, Jensen Huang, is on a mission to spark a sovereign AI wave in Europe. He’s been touring London, Paris, and Berlin, pushing for massive investments and announcing partnerships with local players. The goal? To encourage European countries to develop their own AI capabilities, rather than relying on tech giants from the US and China.
Huang’s message is clear: Europe needs to get serious about AI. He said in Paris, “We’re ready to invest billions in Europe, but Europe needs to step up its AI game.” This echoes the urgency felt across the continent to reduce dependence on American tech behemoths like Microsoft, Google, and Amazon.
European leaders are starting to take notice. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer recently announced a £1 billion (approximately $1.35 billion) investment to boost the country’s cloud computing capabilities. The goal is to make the UK a creator of AI, not just a consumer.
At the VivaTech conference in France, President Emmanuel Macron declared, “Building AI infrastructure is a fight for our sovereignty.” Arthur Mensch, the 31-year-old CEO of French AI startup Mistral, sat alongside Huang on stage, saying, “There’s no reason why Europe can’t have its own tech champions. This is the big dream.”
One of the first concrete projects is a partnership between Mistral and Nvidia to build a massive AI data center in France. The center will use 18,000 of Nvidia’s AI chips in the first phase, with plans to expand to multiple locations across the continent by 2026.
The European Commission has also launched a $20 billion investment program to create “AI Gigafactories” across the EU. Nvidia has expressed interest in supporting this initiative by allocating production lines for AI chips.
As the US and China dominate the global AI landscape, Europe is racing to catch up. With government leaders, tech giants like Nvidia, and startups like Mistral working together, the continent may finally be ready to challenge the world’s AI heavyweights.
