Nuno Borges

Nuno Borges clinched a hard-fought victory on Thursday. He moved into the second round of the Shanghai tournament. It was his first time playing in the Chinese ATP circuit event. Borges faced Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp. He won in two tightly contested sets.

The Portuguese tennis player ranks 51st in the world. His opponent, Van de Zandschulp, sits at 84th. Borges emerged victorious after two tie-breaks. The final score was a double 7-6 (7). This thrilling battle on the hard court lasted two hours and 19 minutes.

Borges, Portugal’s top player, broke the Dutchman’s serve in the first set. However, Van de Zandschulp fought back. He recovered at a crucial moment. Borges was serving to win the set, but couldn’t close it out. Borges then secured the first set in a tie-break. The second set followed a similar script. Both players held their service games strongly. Then Borges claimed that set too, again in a tie-break.

The 28-year-old Borges will now face a significant challenge. He meets Greek star Stefanos Tsitsipas on Sunday. Tsitsipas was once ranked third globally. He is currently 25th in the ATP hierarchy. Tsitsipas is also the 24th seed in the Shanghai tournament. This next match promises to be another tough test.
