The conflict in Ukraine has taken a significant toll on North Korean soldiers fighting on behalf of Russia. With nearly a third of the 11,000 soldiers either injured or killed, the need for reinforcements is urgent. Despite the casualties, North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un is reportedly accelerating preparations to deploy more troops to support Russia’s efforts.
Military Preparations
According to the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) of South Korea, Pyongyang is pushing forward with plans to launch a spy satellite or intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). While there are no immediate signs of an launch, the JCS expects North Korea to continue making preparations for such advanced weapons. Additionally, the country appears to be ready to engage in provocations involving short-range ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, or other tactics at any time.
Effectiveness of North Korean Soldiers
Contrary to initial assumptions, Ukrainian soldiers on the front line have reported that North Korean troops are more effective and brave than previously thought. Despite questioning their qualifications, the fact remains that they have suffered significant casualties, with at least 300 killed and 2,700 injured. The JCS attributes this to the mutual collaboration agreement between Putin and Kim Jong-Un, which has resulted in a substantial North Korean presence on the front.
Ongoing Tensions
The situation remains volatile, with North Korea conducting missile launches earlier this month, including a claimed hypersonic missile. While there are no imminent signs of another launch, the JCS warns that the country is prepared for further provocations. As the conflict in Ukraine continues, the involvement of North Korean soldiers and the potential for advanced weapons launches contributes to the escalating tensions in the region.
