North Korea surged into the semi-finals of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco, securing their spot with a decisive victory and reinforcing their historical dominance in the tournament.
The North Koreans advanced after a commanding 5-1 win over Japan, the 2014 champions. Their quarter-final match was the only one that did not require a penalty shootout to determine a winner.
The team, which holds the record for most titles in the competition, is now set to face Brazil in one of the semi-final matchups. North Korea previously claimed championships in 2008 and 2016, and is now vying for a third title.
In the other semi-final, Mexico will play the Netherlands.
Mexico secured their place by defeating Italy in a penalty shootout, following a 0-0 draw. Goalkeeper Valentina Murrieta was a standout, saving two penalties during regular play and again in the decisive shootout.
The Netherlands also progressed after a dramatic comeback against France. They recovered from a deficit to draw 2-2 in extra time before winning the subsequent penalty shootout.
Brazil, North Korea’s upcoming opponent, likewise overcame Canada on penalties after Canada presented a formidable defense throughout their match.
This edition of the tournament, taking place in Morocco, marks the first time 24 national teams are competing for the U-17 Women’s World Cup title. Other past champions include Spain (2018, 2022), South Korea (2010), France (2012), and Japan (2014).
