Noronha Lopes Slams Rui Costa: Unprepared Leader, Petty Election Tactics

The world of football politics often mirrors the intensity of the game itself. At Benfica, the battle for the club’s future just got personal. This Sunday, candidate Noronha Lopes didn’t pull any punches. He fired off a sharp critique at Rui Costa, the current president. Lopes’s anger boiled over after Costa’s campaign released a statement titled ‘In the Name of Truth’. Noronha Lopes stated flat out, “I already knew Rui Costa was an unprepared president. Now I learn he is a candidate willing to resort to pettiness and low level.”

Lopes didn’t hold back there. He made it clear he doesn’t believe Rui Costa has any right to lecture him on what it means to be a true Benfica supporter, or about courage. Lopes painted a picture of two very different paths. “Unlike him, I never hid from Benfica,” Lopes declared. He reminded everyone of the year 2000. That’s when he stood with Manuel Vilarinho, fighting against Vale e Azevedo. It’s an important detail: Vale e Azevedo became Benfica’s president, and he had Rui Costa’s backing. Many brave souls worked hard to make sure Benfica stayed a club for its members, not just a few people. Then, in 2020, while Rui Costa stayed in the shadows behind Luís Filipe Vieira, Lopes says he was busy fighting. His goal was to bring back dignity and a good name to the club. “Regarding courage or lack thereof, we’ve had our say,” Lopes finished, leaving no doubt about his feelings.

Noronha Lopes then pointed out something curious. He finds it “a pity” that this more aggressive side of Rui Costa only shows up right before an election. With the voting day getting closer, Lopes senses “visible despair” from the leader of the Eagles. It’s a jab suggesting Costa’s fighting spirit isn’t a constant, but a tactic when the stakes are highest.
