A candidate in the ongoing Benfica presidential elections projected an image of unity and democratic participation on Saturday, despite expressing confidence in his own chances for victory.
Noronha Lopes, speaking to reporters upon his arrival at Estádio da Luz to cast his ballot, called for a peaceful “day of democracy” for the prominent Portuguese football club. He highlighted the extensive member participation, with voting taking place across Portugal and internationally.
Lopes noted a “great atmosphere” during the election process and a widespread sentiment among members for change within the club. He emphasized that members should vote, irrespective of their preferred candidate, showcasing the club’s democratic principles.
“What unites us is always much more than what separated us,” Lopes stated, referring to the candidates. He added that the goal was for everyone to be “united around Benfica” starting the following day.
The candidate expressed a firm belief in securing a victory in the first round of voting. However, he clarified that the final decision rested with the members.
Lopes also described the day as one of “Benfiquismo,” celebrating the spirit of the club. He called Benfica the “biggest club in the world” and the “most democratic club,” assertions he believes the election process was once again demonstrating. He indicated he would make further statements after casting his vote.
