Nintendo Confirms The Legend of Zelda Live-Action Film Release Date March 26, 2027

Shigeru Miyamoto just dropped a bombshell. The legendary game designer surprised fans with a major announcement at the end of the Nintendo Direct event in March 2025. This was the first big update to come through Nintendo Today!, the company’s new app that’s all about delivering the latest news, event schedules, and real-time updates to fans.

Miyamoto teased that fans can expect more updates via Nintendo Today!, including a recap of the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 Direct event. This means fans will be able to get the scoop on new games and announcements right after the event wraps up.

You might recall that Nintendo and Sony Pictures first announced a Zelda movie project back in November 2024. Wes Ball, known for The Maze Runner and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, is set to direct, with Avi Arad and Shigeru Miyamoto on board as producers.

Details about the movie are still scarce, but Ball has mentioned that he wants to create a “Live-Action Miyazaki” film, drawing inspiration from the works of Hayao Miyazaki, such as My Neighbor Totoro and Howl’s Moving Castle. He’s also emphasized that the Zelda movie will be a “serious and realistic” adaptation, using motion capture as little as possible.

The fact that Nintendo chose to break the Zelda news through Nintendo Today! instead of social media suggests that the app might become the go-to channel for major announcements in the future. This means fans who want to stay in the loop will need to download the app to get exclusive news and updates.
