New NFC CR15 Standard Quadruples Range for Easier Daily Interactions

A subtle technical upgrade to Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, set to expand its practical range, promises to significantly streamline daily contactless interactions, making them more intuitive and reliable for users worldwide.

The new standard, known as CR15, will increase the effective communication distance for NFC devices from approximately 5 millimeters to about 20 millimeters. This four-fold extension is expected to fundamentally alter the ergonomics and dependability of everyday actions like mobile payments, opening smart doors, or sharing data between devices.

This seemingly minor 15-millimeter improvement aims to eliminate a common point of frustration for users: the need for precise alignment of a phone or watch with a terminal. With CR15, merely bringing a device close enough will suffice.

The NFC Forum, the industry body responsible for the standard, officially announced Certification Release 15 (CR15). This release defines the certification program for devices complying with the updated NFC Release 15 specification.

Current NFC interactions often require careful positioning, leading to delays and failed transactions. The extended range dramatically reduces these “microfrustrations,” allowing for quicker and more seamless contact-free experiences.

Beyond convenience, the upgrade is anticipated to enhance inclusivity, making contactless technology easier to use for children, the elderly, or individuals with limited manual dexterity. The cumulative effect of these small improvements across millions of daily interactions could be substantial.

Adopting the CR15 standard will require compatible hardware in future smartphones, smartwatches, payment terminals, and smart tags. Major manufacturers, such as Apple, are reportedly preparing to implement the new standard, which is likely to accelerate widespread adoption across the market.

This shift is poised to bolster the Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem and improve systems for public transport and access control, reinforcing the interoperability and reliability of proximity communications.
