Nelson Javier: the stutterer who became a “giant crocodile” of communication

As a young man, Nelson Javier suffered from stuttering and “that is why many did not trust that he would go far in the media.” However, they were wrong. “El Cocodrilo”, his popular nickname, went very far, establishing himself as one of the most connoted communicators in the entertainment area in Cibao for several decades.

Nelson was born 56 years ago in San Francisco de Macorís, where the Jaya River leaves traces in its inhabitants who, like him, had a happy childhood. His childhood memories are happydespite not having met his father until six months before his death of covid in 2020.

He grew up with his mother, who despite the precariousness and the fact that life at that time was more difficult, played the role of “mother and father” for him, with the luck that, according to her words, God did. blessed at the end of the road.

In the professional field, he began working on the controls of a station and giving the time of day, until he became an empirical announcer due to the economic conditions that he had at that time.

That family shortage led him to work on the street, including washing vehicles in the river. “That lack of support he had was notorious,” he commented in an interview with LISTÍN DIARIO.

+ From its beginnings
With gratitude, he mentioned the announcer Néstor Montaña “Montañita”, as well as Ángel De Jesús López “El Compa” and Mendy López, as part of the personalities who trusted in his talent giving him the opportunity to belong to the media, which is why have a lot of respect for them.

At the age of 18, Montañita took him to Puerto Plata to work in the radio, where he had a good performance and was the “takeoff” of his professional career in the country. While on the Santiago radio station “KV 94” he finally believed in his abilities with the microphone.

At the “Hits 92” station in Santo Domingo, his nickname “El Cocodrilo” arose, as the use of pseudonyms among program presenters was fashionable. The director of the radio station, José Reyes (JR), was responsible.

In the mid-80s, in the capital he carried out a program with Domingo Bautista and Alberto Bernabé “Bebeto” and from there he did different projects with good acceptance in the heart of the city. After all is history.

+ Students
With great pride, the presenter highlighted the communicators who “have passed through his hands” and the satisfaction he feels when seeing them evolve and be the best of themselves in the workplace. Joseph Tavárez, Addis Burgos and Frederick Martínez “El Pachá” are some of these.

“We program owners must give the opportunity to new talents, with discipline and teaching. That’s the right thing to do, ”he said.

For “The Crocodile” the ability of a person is more important than the way of dressing and showing “meat”. Your collaborators must never fall into vulgarity. “Of all the programs in Santiago, at least one of the presenters has had my tutelage. I am demanding, but with me they learn, I like to teach and that is the legacy I want to leave, “he clarified.

In addition, he advises those passionate about communication the “painting of another color what has already been done” and begin to believe in themselves and that they are capable.

“I want to sow and leave something, not so that they remember me but as an example to the new communicators that emerge in the next few years ”, he stated in his conversation.

Due to the visualizations and the good interaction in networks that it maintains, Nelson Javier got the idea of adapting to the new times by creating a digital platform with varied content, with good teams and that he understands will be important in Cibao. There he will offer opportunities for new talents to showcase their skills.

“I have never believed the movie, nor have I wanted to be the protagonist. I feel that I still need to be successful and I continue working for it ”, he affirmed.

+ Your health
The announcer has been suffering from diabetes for almost 20 years, which is why his right leg was amputated. “In the parking lot of my house there is a covered Mercedes-Benz car, but on my leg I have a prosthesis so I can’t drive that vehicle and I would like to do it,” he said longingly.

In his words, the disease is becoming more acute, however, he feels grateful for the years of life he has and hopes that God will allow him to share with his family for a longer time.

+ The most valuable
“For me the most important thing is God and my loved ones, they are everything and are worth more than all the money in the world. This is my stage of enjoying what I have ”, he assured.

“El Cocodrilo” says that he has mixed the business with the family, since his wife and children are also part of his communication projects, including "The Nelson Show" by Teleunión, from 12:00 to 1:30 in the afternoon, and "Good night", from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Teleuniverso 29.

“The weekends are to share with my relatives, I usually go to my house in Jarabacoa and I give myself the opportunity to be all together. I am persevering and I have the criterion that they will always be above fame, the photos and applause go to the background, “he said.
