Nacional FC Faces Travel ‘Odyssey’ to Portuguese Cup Match

Portuguese football club Nacional faces a demanding test of resilience, navigating extensive travel delays just hours before its pivotal cup match against lower-division Vinhais, which has strategically prepared for the encounter.

The team’s journey began with an overnight stay in Lisbon, arriving past midnight, followed by a morning flight delay from the capital’s airport to Porto. Their flight, scheduled for 8:05 AM local time, departed 24 minutes late at 8:29 AM.

After an approximately hour-long flight and baggage collection, Nacional’s squad embarked on a 218-kilometer bus journey to Vinhais, expected to last nearly three hours. This arduous travel schedule means the team is not anticipated to reach its hotel until after noon, leaving minimal time for pre-match routines.

The third-round Portuguese Cup match is set to kick off at 3:00 PM local time today, with Nacional’s players expected to arrive at the Rebordelo Playing Field in Vinhais just one hour before the whistle. This tight timeline allows only for a light meal upon arrival.

Compounding Nacional’s travel woes, coach Tiago Margarido highlighted the ambition of their Vinhais rivals to advance in the competition. Vinhais’s coach, Gilberto Vicente, recently rested several regular starters in a local cup fixture, indicating a deliberate focus on today’s national cup challenge.

Despite resting players, Vinhais secured a 2-1 victory against Carção in that prior regional cup match.
