Investigation into Damaged Submarine Cables
A recent development in the investigation into damaged submarine cables has led to the confiscation of a ship suspected of causing the damage. The ship, named “Eagle S”, is believed to have damaged the electrical infrastructure linking Finland and Estonia, as well as other submarine cables known as Estlink 2.
Ship Confiscation and Investigation
The Finnish Police, in collaboration with the Coast Guard, have confiscated the ship and are currently transporting it to the port of Kilpilahti for further investigation. The Eagle S, registered in the Cook Islands, was sailing from Russia to Egypt and has been linked to Russia’s “ghost fleet”.
Estimated Damage and Repair Costs
According to the Finnish energy company Fingrid, the repair of the damaged Estlink 2 cable is expected to take until next summer, with estimated costs running into tens of millions of euros. The damage is believed to have occurred on Christmas Day, and investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of the damage caused by the Eagle S.
Additional Damages and Ongoing Investigations
In addition to the damage to the Estlink 2 cable, the Eagle S is also suspected of damaging four other telecommunications cables. The authorities are continuing their investigations into the damage caused by the ship, and further updates are expected in the coming weeks.
