Myanmar Warns of Another Possible Earthquake in Mandalay

People in Mandalay are on edge. Officials warned them to be ready for another earthquake. This could happen from midnight to 8 am on Sunday.

On Saturday night, the government issued a warning. It told people in Amarapura, a town in Mandalay, to be prepared. This warning came after a strong aftershock hit at 11:20 pm.

On Friday, a big earthquake struck. It had a magnitude of 7.7. This happened in the northwest part of the Sagaing region. The center of the quake was just 10 km deep. Many aftershocks followed, including one with a magnitude of 6.7.

The death toll keeps rising. At least 1,644 people are dead. Over 3,408 are injured, and 139 are missing. Mandalay is one of the worst-hit areas. More than 1,591 homes are damaged.

Rescue teams are working hard. But the country’s unrest means they lack equipment. In some areas, rescuers have to dig through rubble with their bare hands.

Still, Myanmar’s rescue team hasn’t given up hope. On Saturday night, they saved a 30-year-old woman. She was trapped under an apartment building in Mandalay for over 30 hours. It’s thought that over 90 people are still trapped under the same building.
