Myanmar Rescuers Save Woman Trapped Under Rubble for 30 Hours

Rescuers in Myanmar freed a 30-year-old woman from under the rubble of an apartment building in Mandalay. She was trapped for over 30 hours.

The building collapsed after a massive earthquake hit the area on Friday. The woman was carried out on a stretcher and reunited with her husband. He said he thought she was dead and was overjoyed to hear she was alive.

The earthquake had a magnitude of 7.7. It struck northwest of the Sagaing region. The epicenter was just 10 kilometers deep. Several aftershocks followed, including one with a magnitude of 6.7.

At least 1,644 people are dead, 3,408 are injured, and 139 are missing. Mandalay is one of the worst-hit areas. Over 1,591 homes and buildings are damaged.

In Kyaukse, a school collapsed, killing at least 12 students and one teacher. Reports say 50 students and six teachers are missing.

Rescue teams are racing to help, but the country’s unstable situation has left them without equipment. Many are digging through rubble by hand.

Mandalay and Yangon are experiencing power outages and phone signal disruptions. It may take days to restore electricity in Mandalay. In Yangon, the power grid is damaged, and residents will only have electricity for four hours a day.
