Myanmar Earthquake Death Toll Exceeds 2,000, Hospitals Overwhelmed

Deadly earthquake leaves Myanmar reeling.
Over 2,000 people are dead.
Many more are hurt.

Myanmar’s military government says the quake killed at least 2,056 people.
More than 3,900 are injured.
270 are missing.

The 7.7 magnitude quake hit on Friday.
It was centered near Mandalay.
The quake was only 12 kilometers deep.
It shook the whole country and parts of neighboring Thailand, India, and China.

Margaret Harris from the World Health Organization says many hospitals are damaged.
Three can’t be used at all.
22 are partially damaged and can’t work fully.

Hospitals that still work are overwhelmed.
They have many injured and dead people.
They also worry about diseases like cholera.

The situation is bad in cities near the quake’s center.
In Mandalay, officials try to help people trapped under rubble.
Crematoriums are full of families who lost loved ones.

In Sagaing, near the quake’s center, officials rush to help teachers and students trapped under a collapsed school building.
A Malaysian rescue team saved the principal on Monday.
But three teachers and eight students are still trapped.

Local people tell the BBC they smell dead bodies in the streets.
The price of body bags in Yangon is going up.
It used to be around 9,000 kyat (145 baht).
Now it’s 10,000-20,000 kyat (161-323 baht).
