A quiet Thursday evening at Munich International Airport turned into a scene of widespread disruption. An unidentified drone was spotted near the airspace, forcing an emergency closure. This sudden event led to the cancellation of at least 17 flights. Another 15 flights had to change course. Thousands of travelers were affected by the sudden halt.
About 3,000 passengers found their travel plans upended. Flights meant for Munich were sent to other cities instead. These included Stuttgart, Nuremberg, Vienna, and Frankfurt. Air traffic controllers quickly stopped all outgoing flights. They also worked with federal police to find out where the drone came from.
Stefan Bayer, a spokesperson for the federal police, spoke to local media. He noted that the incident happened at night. This made it hard to confirm the drone’s type, size, or origin. The drone was first seen at 9:30 PM local time. It appeared again an hour later. As of now, no one has claimed responsibility for flying it.
The airport worked to help the stranded passengers. They set up field beds, blankets, and handed out water and snacks. Many people spent the entire night inside the terminal buildings.
Unfortunate Timing During Oktoberfest
This airport chaos came at a busy time for Munich. The city is currently hosting “Oktoberfest,” a huge beer festival. This global event draws over six million tourists each year. The festival is set to end on October 5th, adding to the pressure on local services.
A Growing Concern Across Europe
The Munich incident is not an isolated event. Many European countries have recently dealt with similar drone sightings. These drones fly near airports and military sites without permission. Both Copenhagen and Oslo airports also had to close temporarily because of unknown drones.
Concerns about unauthorized air activity have been rising. Not long ago, 20 Russian drones reportedly entered Polish airspace. A Russian MiG-31 fighter jet was also accused of flying into Estonian airspace. Russia has denied all these claims. Russian President Vladimir Putin even laughed off suggestions that he ordered drone attacks on Denmark.
These events highlight an unsettling challenge for airport security. Unidentified drones pose a significant threat to air travel. Authorities face the difficult task of identifying and stopping them.
